Welcome to “Sharing Our Journey”

(Time to Read: 2 mins.)

We are excited to welcome you to our new blog: Sharing Our Journey. This is where we will share the exciting projects we are working on, the amazing collaborations we are part of, and the innovative approaches we are taking in education.

Who Are We?

We are a team of educators, learning technologists, and all-round pedagogues working at Vancouver Community College, on the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

Why Are We Doing This Now?

Great question! Postsecondary education is changing fast, with new challenges and opportunities, from the impact of AI, to new funding models and provincial/federal changes, to the way public education is valued and delivered. So we believe it is more important than ever to come together and share our experiences. We are all trying to maximize our resources, and by pooling our efforts and ideas, we can support each other better. Think of this blog as a place to find inspiration, learn from each other, and celebrate shared successes.

Centering Indigenization

We recognize the importance of Indigenization in all our educational practices. This means foregrounding Indigenous perspectives, knowledge, and approaches in institutional cultures. By doing so, we aim to honour, respect and build on the rich histories and continued contributions of Indigenous peoples. Our blog will feature stories and projects that reflect our dedication to this work.

Shining a Light on OER and Equity

Another focus of our blog will be Open Educational Resources (OER) – indeed, the very platform we are using (thank you opened.ca!) is a prime example of the power of open resources. We believe that education should be accessible to everyone, and OER helps make that possible. By sharing free and openly licensed educational resources, we can break down barriers and ensure that everyone has access to high-quality learning.

Equity is at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where all voices are heard and valued. Through our blog, we will highlight initiatives and projects that promote equity and inclusion. And we’d love for you to join us in this important conversation.

The Power of Collaboration

We believe that collaboration is key to overcoming the challenges we face in the postsecondary sector. By working together, we can share our expertise and develop innovative solutions. Our blog will feature stories of successful collaborations, both within VCC and with external partners, showcasing the power of teamwork and collective effort.

Join Us On Our Journey

We invite you to explore the current and soon-to-appear posts, engage with our ideas, and share your own stories and insights via the comments. Together, we can create a community that supports and uplifts one another. Whether you are a faculty member, student, or staff, your voice matters, and we want to hear from you.

Thanks for being a part of our journey. We look forward to sharing this exciting new chapter with you!

Andrew Dunn

Andrew joined VCC in January 2019. After completing a degree in archaeology in Edinburgh, Scotland, he decided that his career lay "in ruins" and retrained as an elearning developer, working in academic and health care organizations. He’s been in Canada since 2006, and when he’s not coordinating or developing online learning resources, he sings tenor in the Vancouver Gaelic Choir, is a Whitecaps season ticket holder, and likes to traumatise his cat Niichii via the medium of accordion.
