AI Insight: CTLR’s AI Workshop Series
This is the first in a series of articles on artificial intelligence and GenAI, in which we’ll cover some historical technological background, along with the specific projects and tools in use at Vancouver Community College, and how the Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Research (CTLR) is supporting and guiding their use.
(For a grand overview of our approaches to using GenAI in teaching and learning, check out this collection of AI resources from CTLR.)
Starting in April 2024, Instructional Associates in VCC’s Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Research hosted a series of workshops on GenAI and its uses in post-secondary education.
Here are video recordings from those workshops:
Redesigning Assessments with AI in mind
Emily Simpson, Oct. 18/24
This workshop provided a framework for evaluating a course assignment/assessment’s vulnerability to GenAI. It covered guiding questions when considering assessment design, and looked at possible options for mitigating or integrating AI use. We explored prompts for redesigning assessments, and some specific tools like NotebookLM, Leon Furze’s AIAS scale custom GPT, and McMaster Assessment Partner.
Building Moodle Quiz and H5P activities with GenAI
Emily Simpson, Oct. 10/24
This workshop explored using Copilot and ChatGPT to build Moodle quizzes and H5P activities, using a series of prompts created by CTLR’s Andrew Dunn. We also looked at using a custom GPT, “Video Summarizer”, to support creating interactive videos.
Co-Developing Course Materials with Copilot
Emily Simpson, Oct. 04/24
This workshop reviewed the use of Microsoft Copilot (with Enterprise license) to co-develop teaching materials via text and image generation, reflecting recent October changes to Copilot. We also reviewed the use of ChatGPT for image analysis for alt text generation, summarizing hand-drawn notes, and explored some custom GPTs and Claude artifacts that could be useful in education work.
Revise your Assessment to Mitigate or Integrate AI
Emily Simpson, Jul. 29/24
This workshop explored how to revise assessments for AI using AI. We used a series of guiding questions to determine what meaningful learning is for course learning outcomes, we used a decision-making flowchart to decide if its appropriate to integrate AI into an assignment, and we went through testing assessment vulnerabilities to AI. Finally, we explored McMaster’s Assessment Partner, a series of prompts with an AI chatbot, and a custom GPT, to look at different tools you can use for assessment redesign.
Teaching in the Age of AI — July 2024
Emily Simpson, Jul. 15/24
This workshop provided updates on AI trends in education, and covered how to develop a holistic approach to AI throughout your course, centering conversations with students, and reflecting on what learning is meaningful now and how to assess it.
The Centre for Teaching, Learning and Research (CTLR) at Vancouver Community College supports teaching and learning through four core areas of service: Professional Development in Teaching and Learning, Indigenous Course & Program Support, Curriculum Development, and ELearning Support in the integration of learning technology.
