Exploring UDL to Reduce Accommodation Requests
As Online Developers at Vancouver Community College, we’re excited to embark on a new project in collaboration with VCC Disability Services: “Exploring UDL to Reduce Accommodation Requests at VCC”.
A few years ago, one of our first conversations in this role with VCC Disability Services centered on the potential of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to proactively reduce the need for accommodations. Now, we’re taking steps to explore whether UDL can make a meaningful impact.
Our Project Plan
Our project is structured into four key phases, each designed to build upon the previous stage to ensure a comprehensive approach to UDL implementation. Through these phases, we aim to assess current challenges, develop targeted solutions, test UDL strategies in a real-world setting, and scale successful practices across the college.

Phase 1: Needs Assessment
We’ll begin by analyzing data on accommodation requests to identify common themes.
Phase 2: Pilot Program Preparation
Next, we’ll select a department for the pilot program in consultation with Disability Services and faculty leadership.
Phase 3: Pilot Implementation
During this phase, we’ll monitor the implementation of UDL strategies in the pilot department throughout the term.
Phase 4: Evaluation and Scale-Up
To measure impact, we’ll compare pre- and post-implementation data on accommodation requests in the pilot department.
We’re eager to see how this project unfolds and to collaborate with Disability Services in creating more inclusive learning environments at VCC. Stay tuned for updates!
